Dreaming Surplus Green Energy

By Staff Reporter

There is no other option but to tap green energy for sustainable and stable energy supply for the Islands. It seems the policymakers have taken it too seriously. In the presentation prepared for the IDA Standing Committee, the Admn has dared to think beyond the routine. The title of the presentation is apt - "World's first Archipelago run on Green Energy." The Island Administration has already announced "The New & Renewable Sources of Energy Policy for A & N Islands" in April 2012.

The policy aims at new and alternatives sources of energy and bids were invited on 16th October 2012 for solar rooftop panels. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy was approached in Jan 2012 for 'Energy Mapping' of the Islands for renewable sources. The presentation says that there had been past efforts with ONGC for CNG exploration, NPCL for nuclear energy exploration and NTPC for Bio-Mass and Solar energy.

The Admn also feels that geo-thermal stations may be possible due to presence of India's only live volcano at Barren Island. The presentation also claims that with surplus 'Green Energy', all public and private transport in the Islands can be entirely run on electricity.
